Huckins Farm, New Hampton, NH
Tucked among the rolling green hills of central New Hampshire, somewhere between the Lakes Region and the White Mountains, Huckins Farm feels like a place from another time. Cows wander across open pasture, the farm store is stocked with dairy made just steps away, and visitors are welcomed with the easy warmth of neighbors dropping by.
This 132-acre farm has been worked since 1784, with the Huckins family caring for the land since 1906. Today, Matty Huckins tends the farm alongside family and friends, carrying forward generations of agricultural tradition while keeping the operation intentionally small and personal.
At the heart of Huckins Farm is a herd of registered Guernsey and Jersey cows. For three seasons of the year, the cows graze rotationally on the farm's lush pastures. When winter settles over New Hampshire, they move into spacious, airy quarters with room for exercise, fresh air and sunshine. Each cow is known by name, with her own personality, preferences and place in the farm family.
And then there is the milk.
Huckins Farm's Guernsey cows produce naturally rich, golden A2 milk with the creamy character for which the breed is treasured. That milk becomes an array of small-batch foods made right on the farm, including raw milk and cream, yogurt, kefir, and fresh and aged cheeses. Visitors may arrive intending to pick up a bottle of milk and find themselves lingering to meet the cows, see where their food comes from, and enjoy the rhythms of a working New Hampshire dairy.
There's something wonderfully old-fashioned about it all: the kind of experience that recalls a time when buying milk meant knowing the farmer, seeing the pasture and bringing home something produced just down the road. Yet Huckins Farm's outlook is firmly rooted in the future, too. Through farm events, workshops and educational opportunities, the family hopes to strengthen connections between people, agriculture and the land while encouraging a healthier and more sustainable community.
Farm products are available at the on-site farm store, online, and through select stores and food cooperatives around New Hampshire.
Whether you come for the creamy milk, handcrafted cheese, beautiful countryside or simply the chance to say hello to the cows, Huckins Farm is worth the country drive. Don't be surprised if what was supposed to be a quick stop feels a little like stepping back in time; and don't be surprised if you leave already planning your next visit.
