Brookford Farm, Canterbury, NH
Catarina and Luke Mahoney met at a farm near St. Petersburg, Russia in the fall of 1999 and lived there for five years. This 240-acre diversified, biodynamic farm was set up to provide a healthy living and working environment for handicapped individuals. At the farm they were exposed to many different aspects of agriculture and sustainable living.
In October of 2004, Catarina and Luke moved with their son Oliver to Kattendorfer Hof near Hamburg, Germany. Kattendorfer Hof is a diversified biodynamic farm with a strong concentration on CSA and direct marketing. Catarina took part in the formal biodynamic apprenticeship program with a focus in vegetable production and Luke worked with the cows. This was a formative year for the couple as they took part in farm production on a scale and level of efficiency which they had never previously seen.
In January 2007, the Mahoney family moved with their two sons to Brookford Farm in Rollinsford, New Hampshire. With access to 200 acres of grass and past experience, they knew that dairy was exactly where they wanted to begin. They began by shipping milk to the Organic Valley co-operative and sold a small amount of raw milk and cream on the side. The market for their bottled raw milk and other dairy products grew to the point that in the spring of 2010, they could no longer supply Organic Valley. Noticing a local demand for good food, they began producing pastured meats, eggs and vegetables.
With the help of Gary and Meg Hirshberg, New Hampshire Community Loan Fund and family and friends, the Mahoneys found a permanent home for their farm in Canterbury, New Hampshire. In 2012, Brookford Farm moved its entire operation and staff from Rollinsford to the new site situated along the Merrimack River and located 15 minutes north of Concord. The farm, formerly a sod farm, is being adapted to productive agricultural land using sustainable methods.
Today, Brookford is a 600-acre diversified farm with 35+ acres in certified organic vegetable production. The farm is also home to cattle, hogs, and chickens, all rotated on pasture as the seasons allow with diets supplemented by organic grain. Their products are distributed to a 250+ member year-round CSA, restaurants, retail stores, and farmers markets. They have a farm store and artisan bakery on site. Milk from their dairy herd is bottled raw or turned into a wide variety of dairy products in their creamery.
