Apple Hill Farm, Concord, NH

By Helen Brody

apphillstrawberriesOver 25 years ago Diane and Chuck Souther started Apple Hill Farm from unproductive open space within sight of the state capitol in Concord, New Hampshire. Today they have a substantial planting of 45 different varieties of apples planted on the hillside overlooking their farmstand, berry patch, and cropland. Twenty different flavors of peaches and a small number of plum trees fill out their orchards. They work closely with University of New Hampshire to grow their fruit and vegetables using environmentally sustainable methods, as pesticide free as possible. Apple Hill Farm annually partners with UNH and USDA researchers to develop new sustainable growing practices so that the farm is a sustainable and resilient land based business.

Pick your own strawberries are their first summer berry crop, followed by blueberries, raspberries, and black currants. A wide variety of vegetables grown on the farm complememt their berries, for sale at the farm and  farmers markets (see listing below).

Apple Hill’s Farm stand, which opens in early August (check website below) has a complete kitchen to make slow simmered jams and jelliesDiane making apple butter 2012 with their own fruit. Baked goods, many chosen by Diane as Chuck’s  favorites, and dried coffee cake and pancake mixes complete the kitchen items. Apple Hill Farm also has a unique CSA program that allows CSA members to shop at the Farmers Markets, in the various berry fields, and at the farmstand. Members enjoy great discounts and special CSA member promotions.  See website or visit the farm starting in June strawberry season to purchase your CSA card.
