Know Your Farmers:
Autumn Harvest Farm, Grafton

“Our tomato plants are grafted from other plants off the farm as one would an apple tree,” says Autumn Harvest Farm’s Ray LeBlanc. “Since tomatoes are planted each year in the tunnel, grafting helps to prevent disease that may be carried in the soil from previous plantings.”

They purchase grafted plants because the grafting process is a skill and requires a special amount of time and care to be successful. “We choose to leave this to people who know how to do it and spend our time doing other farm chores,” continues Ray.

From Farm to Kitchen:
Tomato and Yellow Pepper Salad
Because it gets better with time and will hold up for several hours without refrigeration, this salad makes a great buffet or picnic vegetable salad (try putting chunks on skewers for a picnic). Yellow pepper is sweeter and more distinctive than green. The longer the cumin seeds set in oil, the more cumin flavor it will have. A good white wine vinegar is a neutral vinegar that should be in every salad maker’s pantry.

Waiting for that Change in the Weather

The old saying is if you don’t like the weather here in New England, just wait a minute and it will change. Farmers have been waiting a whole month-maybe this week it will change. The National Weather Service reports total rainfall for the month of June in Concord was nearly twice the normal – 6.78 inches vs. 3.69 inches.
